In first-century Judea, Rome became the occupying force and Herod was just a client king of the Emperor. Caesar was king. He was revered, had his way, and no one dared trample on his authority. With that backdrop of experience, with all the aggravations that brought, the Jews longed for their promised Messiah – a King who would rule over all kings forever.
