Hebrews – Larry Waller

The Book of Hebrews – Annex

Too often people view the book of Hebrews as of significance to the Jewish Christians in the first century who were in danger of misunderstanding the nature, the purposes, and the duration of the law of Moses.  Hebrews was relevant to their needs but is also relevant today.  It helps us to understand how the Old Covenant prepared for, pointed to, and prophesied the New Covenant.  It demonstrates that one of the aspects of the harmony between the Testaments is that the New is the substance of which the Old is the shadow.  The relationship between the two is one of the proofs of the divine origin of the Bible.

The letter to the Hebrews emphasizes the superiority of Christ as a prophet, His superiority to angels and the fact that Christ is our King and Priest – a Priest after order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7).

This quarter we will be studying these subjects plus an obedient faith which is emphasized through examples of men and women of great faith that are detailed in Hebrews 11.   Hebrews is also of great value in warning us against apostasy and the necessity of our endurance.    Although we are not tempted to go back to the Law of Moses itself, many of the appeals that come to us today are an attempt to involve us in ceremonialism,  and carnal ordinances such as were found in the Old Testament.   Christians are members of the Everlasting Kingdom.  This Kingdom will never be destroyed or moved out of its place.  This Kingdom was prophesied in Daniel 2:44.
